Watching someone you care about struggle can be painful—and you might not always know how to help. Here are practical ways to support your loved one without overwhelming them or yourself.
What You Can Do:
1. Listen Without Judgment
Let them talk without trying to fix or minimize their feelings. Phrases like “That sounds really hard” or “I’m here for you” go a long way.
2. Learn About Their Experience
Educate yourself on mental health conditions (like depression, anxiety, or PTSD) so you can better understand what they’re going through.
3. Offer Consistent Support
Check in regularly. A simple message or offer to spend time together can make them feel less alone.
4. Encourage Professional Help (Gently)
If they’re open to it, suggest they speak to a counselor. You might say, “Have you thought about talking to someone? I can help you find support if you want.”
5. Take Care of Yourself Too
Supporting others can be draining. Make sure you’re also tending to your own emotional health and setting healthy boundaries.
What Not to Say:
“Just cheer up.”
“Other people have it worse.”
“You’re overreacting.”
Empathy and patience are powerful tools. Just being present can be life-changing.
